A Minister That Turned Bad

I recently read an article in the Roanoke Times newspaper that told of a case where a minister was sentence to eight months in jail. This caught my eye because a minister should not being going to jail, as he would be the last person I would suspect as a criminal. This minister from a Roanoke, Virginia church is a criminal. Rev. Joseph Mayo, of Paradise Cathedral church, was cheating on his taxes and receiving disability benefits that he shouldn't have received. He was cheating the government, and ultimately cheating the people who he was trying to help. Rev. Mayo preached ever since he was a young boy, and wanted to help people. I think he is a hypocrit. This is a man that tells people to give to the less fortunate, but drives a Rolls Royce, for a car. The money that this car cost could have helped out a lot of people that are struggling in today's society. The 53 year old Reverend, was living in a $615,000 home. He was receiving all this money from his business he didn't pay taxes on. He was also getting money for a disability. He said that he could not work do to a back injury, but he preached during this time. This whole article is disturbing to me. As a young person, you look up to people. I am a Christian, and I go to church almost every Sunday. I look up to my pastor. In seeing this article, I do not look at my pastor the same way anymore. My pastor has done nothing wrong. As a young person you think that the last person to be a criminal would be a pastor. They are supposed to be "perfect." Rev. Mayo has proved that preachers are still human beings, and you can't trust everyone.
